Option number on comes from the sky~

This beautiful red tail Hawk was a bit unhappy with me as he cast a final piercing glance back over his shoulder to make sure I understood that he did not appreciate my interrupting his snack time.

Option number 2 comes from the water

and this reptile unlike the hawk above was more than happy that I had come along, and let it be known that I was welcome for dinner any time :-)

I have seen a few different alligators since we got to south Texas.. love the personality that they each are so full of.. Pretty amazing creatures indeed.

Sunday is Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all the beautiful women in the world..

Busy week ahead.. but going  to spread my wings and welcome it with open arms!

Stumbled upon this beautiful Redtail feeding on a cotton tail in the tall grass while I was out with our son yesterday.. he held real still for a long time hoping that he was invisible..

I wonder if I that tactic will work for me.. If I hold really, really still and don’t make eye contact…..

Working at my computer, I often get lost looking out my windows at the beautiful world around me.. Spring is here, and I am greeted each morning with an amazing sunrise..beautiful bird songs and an array of wildlife. This year a pair of very vocal Kestrel have returned to the nest box on the hill.. I like to think that maybe it is the little male I released a few years back, as he was born in that very same nest box which has been empty since.. and you would have to spend some time in my yard to understand, just how “vocal” this little male is..

On one of my morning walks, I spooked some chukar  out of the low growing juniper, only to realize that there was a pair of golden eagles soaring over head using my passage  to locate their next meal.. Along the Creek there is also a pair of  Redtail Hawks that have been busy carrying building material to their soon to be nest in the top of an old cottonwood tree.. I have heard the great horned owls mournful call at night but have not spotted them yet this year..

Will make for some interesting hunting when the babies are all born.. I know one thing for sure, I would not want to be a small furry animal in this valley in a few months.

Feathers slice through clear cold air  directly overhead, nearly silent, in the early dawn among  quietly falling snowflakes. I am always amazed by the movements of the natural world and the creatures who inhabit our planet. From the majestic hawk to the vole scurrying underfoot, nature moves with a rhythm and grace we as humans have become far removed from.  As I stand in the forest soaking up all the sights, sounds, smells and majesty of it all, I am reminded of my place in this never ending spiral of life.  Bright red tail feathers contrast sharply with the grey tree limbs and white blanket of new fallen snow as the hawk slips through the forest canopy. I can only imagine the freedom of his silent flight, as the forest engulfs me and the cold bites my flesh. My footfalls sound foreign against the earth, announcing to the forest that I am passing through. Somehow, as I tread through the deepening snow, my spirit begins to soar with the hawk.  In my minds eye I am part of it all, slipping quietly through the forest our wings nearly touching. Yes the Hawk and I are related, brothers of the earth, sons of the spiral, kindred spirits of the forest.  Silent wings slice through the clear cold air!

A lone warrior crouches behind the cover of a scrub cedar tree. His elk skin clothing blends with the earth as he crouches even lower to the ground. oOnly twenty feet away, six mounted soldiers scan the soil for sign of his passing.
Shining Hawk is his name. He is a Lakota warrior with many war honors to his name, he is not a young man any more, but his strength and stamina are still legendary among his people. The cavalry mounts sense his presence but the wind is not in their favor so they have no way of locating him.
Suddenly one of the horses picks up his scent on a rogue breeze from the west. The horses head comes up, and he turns to face the hidden warrior. At that exact moment a red tailed hawk blows out of the tree that he is hiding behind and races right toward the mounted soldiers. At the last moment the hawk shoots skyward directly in front of the now spooked horses and riders. The soldiers regain control of their steeds and retreat back into the direction from which they came.
As soon as the thunder of hooves is distant, Shining Hawk raises his arms to the sky offering up a prayer to the creator. He thanks the one above for his good fortune and thanks his brother the red tail for saving his life. As he turns toward home he hears the cry of a hawk from somewhere in the vast sky, he smiles and waves to his winged brother. We are all related… he prays… thank you …

Well the New Year is finally upon us and as promised my two boys have taken the list of names that you entered and chosen just one.. this was quite the task and they both fought hard for their favorites… they narrowed the list, time and again, taking some off and re-adding them again. Following some minor squabbles and bribery they have finally held up the the task, and the hawk now has a name…. “Sinte Luta” this is Lakota Sioux language for “Red Tail” a very beautiful and well chosen name for this fantastic bird..

Thank you all for your entries, you did not make it easy, that is for sure.

Congratulations go out to Steve B. from Shooting my Universe. You are the winner of a free 11X14 signed print. And after seeing all of the wonderful photography that you have on your blog, I hope you will accept my humble gift for all your hard work… A 45 min search of the Lakota language, you sure put your time in..Not an easy language to decipher as there is the Old language which is almost forgotten as well as the new language.

The ironic thing about this name and the work that Steve did is that my husband was raised Lakota.. I don’t believe that I have told anyone this on the blog, so Steve would have had no idea that I already knew what Cetan Luta, and Sinte Luta meant. For my children to chose the name, I wrote all the entries down on a piece of paper, I did not tell them who entered the name, or what language they came from, just the meanings.

Happy New Year to everyone.. from the bottom of my heart.. May this be a New Year of wonderful new beginnings and surprises..

Two different interpretations of the same photograph.. What do you think?
Have you chosen a name yet?? Only one more day….
good luck and thank you, to all who took the time to enter.

Help name this bird.. only three days left
43 entries thus far.. but plenty of room for more..
(hint hint to.. Joe, E, Sara, Pam, Mom and Dad or even Susan.and any body else that has not entered yet. ???
..The boys don’t know who is submitting the names and if they happen to chose one from a family member then we will put the rest of the contestants in a hat and draw for the free picture. just to keep it fair…)
