Wings beat overhead, through the morning sky a bald eagle glides toward the earth. With a slight tip of his feathers he maneuvers through the sky, while descending on nearly silent wings. Every feather on this magnificent bird is designed for perfect flight, from the wingtips to the tail. The ancient peoples believed the eagle was sacred , saying he could fly the highest, therefore the eagle was a messenger directly to the creator. Maybe the eagle can’t actually fly off into heaven, but surely the sight of these beautiful birds does in some way remind us that we are watched over from above. The eagle lands in a cottonwood tree beside the river, Stacey takes the shot with her camera , capturing the moment in a way she only can. I watch the bird as it looks down upon us from high in the trees, suddenly the graceful wings spread to their full length and the lord of all raptors once again takes to the sky. I am for a moment entranced by the spectacle of the great bird of prey as he scans the river for some unlucky fish hiding in the shallows. I look away for a moment , when I look back the bird is gone from sight. Did he simply disappear among the cloudless sky, or has he somehow taken flight among the heavens telling the creator of our meeting and the honor and respect he felt from us during our brief encounter.
