Moonlight streaming through the treetops illuminates the hillside in white light, where shadows loom the darkness seems to have no bounds. Since I was a small boy the full moon has had a profound effect on me. Restlessness, combined with a desire to explore the night when the moon is full, has caused me to wander through the moonlight on more than one occasion. There is no doubt that the moon has power. The moon moves oceans, dictates the movements of animals in the wild and effects humans throughout the world as it moves through it’s phases. I have often wondered what it is about the beautiful luminescent orb that attracts us so much. Wolves will speak to the moon for long moments as will coyotes. Do they share a secret with the moon that we can not comprehend? Or, do they, like me, sense something of it’s power, and voice their honor of the natural order of things in the night? We as human beings may never know what the other animals feel or know about the power of the moon, but we will certainly look toward the heavens and marvel at the majesty of the bright sphere looking down upon us.
I sit upon a large rock bathed in soft moonlight, the night is still and quiet except for the call of an owl in the distance. It is answered by another, in a voice understood only by owls. I am for a moment part of the natural world around me, suddenly the light fades and is gone, a large cloud has moved across the sky obscuring the bright light and blocking out the moon. Pitch black darkness once again claims the night. The magic of the moonlight is erased from sight but I can still feel the power in the night. I turn and retrace my steps through the darkness back to my camp. As I go, the wind picks up and a coyote sends a song across the night, as if on cue the moon reappears, lending light to shadow on the mountainside. Yes! The coyote must know something about the moon and it’s magic, but he will probably never tell.
